A New York Times bestseller for twenty-one weeks upon publication, Unfinished Tales is a collection of narratives ranging in time from the Elder Days of Middle-earth to the end of the War of the Ring, and further relates events as told in The Silmarillion and The Lord of the Rings.

The book concentrates on the lands of Middle-earth and comprises Gandalf's lively account of how he came to send the Dwarves to the celebrated party at Bag-End, the story of the emergence of the sea-god Ulmo before the eyes of Tuor on the coast of Beleriand, and an exact description of the military organization of the Riders of Rohan and the journey of the Black Riders during the hunt for the Ring.

Unfinished Tales also contains the only surviving story about the long ages of Númenor before its downfall, and all that is known about the Five Wizards sent to Middle-earth as emissaries of the Valar, about the Seeing Stones known as the Palantiri, and about the legend of Amroth.

  • Tolkien's Great, These Publishers Aren't

    By Alex Banuelos
I love the stories in this book and everybody should definitely read them. However, this version is sloppily done. Twice the captions that should show up at the top of each page just show up randomly in the text and throw everything off. This doesn't seem like much, but even one such occurrence is too much for a competent publisher. Moreover, there are missing spaces and the accent in 'ä' is displaced throughout, which looks atrocious. These people should be ashamed to charge money for such shoddy work. What a shame these slobs tarnish (even if in a small degree) the grandeur of these tales with their lazy, unprofessional publication. They should be honored to publish these stories and instead they pick their noses while they're at it.
  • Great, exciting book!

If you liked The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion you need to read this book. I loved the first story of Tuor and His Coming to Gondolin. It's fun to read more about men, elves, dwarves, etc. from The Lord of the Rings. I loved reading about the Púkel Men. There's also more about Thorin and Gandalf. Much easier to read than The Silmarillion. Definitely worth buying in digital or print form.
  • Unfinished Tales.....

I like it, especially the fall of Numenor. However, I thought the story of Hurin's release from Angbadh after Turin's death was going to be included. Perhaps it is in another book.
